The Vikings and White Christ

With King Horik II permission, a church has been built in Ripa.
Some of the townspeople have agreed to be baptized,
while others stick to Odin, Thor, Freya and the rest of the old gods.

The meeting of religions

A new faith was slowly introduced in Denmark in the middle of the 9th century. Led by the missionary Ansgar, Christianity came rolling up through southern Jutland, and the thriving Viking market town Ribe became the location for the first church in present Denmark.

Among many things, this week will offer a historical ceremony in the Ansgar Church 860 AD and also a meeting with the Völva as she represents the old customs and religious practices.

The first Christians in Ribe
The archaeologists have excavated a large number of 9th century Christian graves at Ribe Cathedral. Research later established that the dead had been brought up locally, and the extent of the burial site testifies that there was a large Christian congregation in and around Ribe at least 100 years before Denmark was declared Christian by King Harold Bluetooth.
