The woodturner

Beautiful things of great value

The turner spends many hours on every bowl and plate. These have been prized possessions of great value - something that will become evident when you hold the finished piece in your own hand.

In Ribe the soil conditions have not been conducive to the preservation of wood, but in other Viking settlements, such as Hedeby/Haithabu in northern Germany and York in northeastern England, a great number of wooden objects have been recovered. As an amusing side note, an entire street in the latter city has been named after the Danish word for 'beaker.' "Coppergate" was at the woodturners' street in the York of 930AD and after.
