The journey into the world of the Vikings

A visual timeline places the Viking Age in its local, national and international context. Visualisation by Torden & Lynild

Interpretation first, architecture second. The interpretive concept is already in place, and four architectural practices are now developing their proposals for Ribe VikingeCenter’s new entrance building.

Interpretation, anticipation and atmosphere

Work on Ribe VikingeCenter’s new entrance building, Gateway to Ripa, is well underway. The project marks an ambitious new step in developing the experience for the Centre’s 75,000 annual visitors. This is where your encounter with the Viking world begins, and from the outset a number of deliberate and slightly unusual choices have shaped the project.

At Gateway to Ripa, interpretation and atmosphere will play a central role. It will not simply be a place you pass through, but a place where anticipation begins to build. That is why the process has been approached differently from usual. Instead of letting the architecture define the experience, the interpretive concept was developed first. The narrative, themes and visitor experience have therefore already been established before the architects put pen to paper.

The studio Torden & Lynild has been appointed as interpretation consultant and is helping to ensure that the building and the storytelling work together as a natural whole. Moving through the building should feel intuitive and provide a sensory, experience led introduction to the heart of Ribe VikingeCenter: the reconstructed and living Viking environment.

The architectural competition is underway

The architectural competition has now been launched, and four experienced architectural practices with strong portfolios are taking part: Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter, Lundgaard & Tranberg Arkitekter, ADEPT and Cobe. They are now developing proposals for an architectural design that actively supports the storytelling and atmosphere. The aim is to create an entrance that works well in everyday use while also enhancing the overall visitor experience. A building that draws visitors in and inspires them to continue into the living Viking environment beyond.

The project board is greatly looking forward to seeing how all the elements come together in a complete visitor experience, where the journey through Gateway to Ripa feels like a journey through time and atmosphere.
