Did you know...

The Longhouse is one of the buildings at the Hviding Farm, reconstructed by Ribe VikingeCenter following a major archaeological find dated to around  980 AD at the village Gammel Hviding near the Wadden Sea.

In the time of Harald Bluetooth in the late tenth century, most people lived in villages on large farms with several buildings, kitchen gardens and land for their animals.

The Longhouse includes a gate passage, a small stable, a large hall and living space with a hearth, and a smaller living room. The building is 35 metres long, and its reconstruction at Ribe VikingeCenter required 160 solid oak trunks and 4,996 hand cut roof shingles.

The size and construction of the Longhouse show that it was once home to a very wealthy and influential farmer.
