Role play mystery SHADOWS IN THE DARK

It is autumn in the Viking town of Ripa. The sun’s light and warmth are fading, the days grow shorter and the chill creeps up your legs. The Vikings know this is the turning of the year, yet there is always a fear of what the dark season might bring.

Meanwhile, the völva has given a particularly grim prophecy: the winter will be harsh, the darkness long, and food scarce. Something must be done before the sun disappears completely. Worst of all, the town’s sun symbol, needed to call upon the gods’ goodwill, has vanished. The search now begins. Enemies must be unmasked and the sun symbol restored.

Help solve the mystery

The Vikings need your help to uncover the enemies and retrieve the sun symbol. Come along to Ribe VikingeCenter, where your mission will be explained and you will learn how to take part in solving the mystery.

No costume or role play experience is required. You only need a taste for a good story and the will to seek clues and solve tasks. It is the perfect occasion to bring along your brother, cousin or a good friend to Ribe VikingeCenter and share an adventure together. At the end of the day, everyone gathers for a Thing assembly, where the role players must reveal what they have discovered.

Age group: About 6–13 years plus their parents or grandparents. For the youngest children, it is a very good idea to be accompanied by an older sibling or an adult. Each participant receives a task, moves about on their own, seeks out Vikings and reports back at the Thing assembly.

Duration: You should set aside at least an hour for the role play. The latest start is 1.30 pm. The role play concludes with a Thing assembly at 2.45 pm, where participants can share their discoveries. Many children become deeply absorbed in the Viking world and need more time. Besides the role play itself, there are of course other activities at Ribe VikingeCenter. You may leave the role play at any time.

Price: Participation in the role play is FREE with your admission ticket to Ribe VikingeCenter.

Workshop: Fire, smoke and autumn dishes

Step into the Viking kitchen, where food cooked over the fire captures the flavours of autumn. As darkness falls, we prepare warming dishes together, hear about the trials of the dark season on a Viking farm and enjoy our meal at the communal table in the hall of the Longhouse, just as in the days of Harald Bluetooth.

The workshop takes place on Wednesday 15 October from 16:00-19:00. Book your place by purchasing a ticket, 175 DKK plus admission. Read more here:
