Step into the Viking farm kitchen and dine at the high table
The lady of the house welcomes you with a small cup of mead in the grand hall of the longhouse at the Hviding Farm Estate. She will then take you on a short tour of the farm and its gardens. This is where the preparations for the day’s meal begin, as you gather wild, edible herbs to flavour the food. Back in the kitchen, the hearth must be lit, ingredients prepared, and a delightful, mouth-watering aroma fills the air as pans and pots start to sizzle.
Join this warm and welcoming workshop, where you and the housewife prepare a delicious meal using ingredients that would have been available during the Viking Age:
Planked salmon with nettle pancakes and fresh herb cheese.
Honey-roasted sausages with flatbread, mustard and freshly churned herb butter.
Served with cordial.
Expect a few cosy hours where foraging, cooking, and communal dining come together to tell the story of Viking food culture. The lady of the house will share her best tips, hoping to inspire you to try more open-fire cooking at home. You – the participants – will work together on the various tasks before the meal is served in the longhouse hall, where we dine at the high table, just as people did in King Harald Bluetooth’s time.
