Fruit marinated in mead

Although mead is an ancient drink, you may especially associate it with the Vikings. For them, mead was a treasured pleasure, a drink of the gods, brewed from honey, which was very valuable.

Fruit marinated in mead

The mead marinated fruit is a delicious dessert in its own right, perhaps served with a little whipped cream, or with vanilla ice cream for a more modern dessert. You can also enjoy the fruit in a warm pancake or on a bowl of good porridge.

Procedure

Cut the fruit into bite-sized pieces and place in a bowl. Dissolve some honey in the mead and pour over the fruit. Cover the bowl.

Let the fruit steep for a short while, then gently turn it with a spoon so it does not become crushed and lose its shape. Make sure all the fruit takes on the flavour of the mead.

Leave to steep for at least 1 hour in a cool place, not the refrigerator, before serving.

Ingredients

4 persons
  • Fresh fruit such as apple, pear, plum, raspberry, blueberry
  • Mead
  • Honey

Cook's notes

Mead is a sweet, fermented drink made from honey, water and spices. You should not confuse mead with beer. It is closer to sherry or port. You can enjoy mead as a dessert wine or a welcome drink. You can also use mead in drinks, cocktails, marinades and dressings, and this drink of the gods goes well with cheese, tapas and coffee.

Get started with your own experiments. The shop at Ribe VikingeCenter offers a selection of different meads.

For this recipe, it is best to use a plain mead. However, if you already have a good mead brewed with spices, fruit and berries in the cupboard, you can use that.
