What's a reenactor?

A reenactor is somebody with a great interest in Viking history and who has their own Viking equipment: Garments, tents, tools etc. They master one or more handicrafts, they are usually part of a reenactor group, and they join Ribe VikingeCenter for about 1-2 weeks during their vacation.

During our opening season we welcome around 1,000 reenactors in Ribe VikingeCenter. We offer amazing settings for them to immerse themselves in the Viking way of life, be with their group and meet other reenactors. Especially in the Summer, the number of interpreters and volunteers is high, and for everything to run smoothly, it is important that we all abide to the rules in Ribe VikingeCenter. That said, the atmosphere is always relaxed and friendly, and we are very greatful when reenactors offer to lend a hand e.g. in one of our workshops or with events.

Ribe VikingeCenter is a tourist attraction and so we expect the reenactors staying with us to take part in our presentation and communication of Viking Age Ripa. The reenactors need to be authentic, willing to meet our visitors and explain to them about camp, equipment, handicraft and so on.

How can I join Ribe VikingeCenter as a reenactor?

So, here's what you need to join us as a reenactor:

• You need to have your own authentic Viking equipment and garments.
• You must have experience with interpretation/storytelling.
• If you haven't been a reenactor in Ribe VikingeCenter before, we ask you to send us references and pictures of your group, equipment and crafts.

It is possible for you to stay and work in either the Marketplace 710-750 AD, Ripa Town 825 AD or the Hviding Farm Estate 980 AD. We offer a daily allowance to those staying for a minimum of five consecutive days.

Please note! It is not allowed to conduct any sales of "considerable extent" and that all trade items must be pre-approved by Ribe VikingeCenter.

When in the season can I join?

We welcome reenactors all season from May till October.

During the season we have a number of special events to highlight some of the most popular topics. They are handicrafts, cooking, trade, storytelling, music, textile, religion etc. Perhaps you would like to join us during one of these events. 

The International Viking Market

Reenactors show an increasing interest in participating during our International Viking Market in April/May. However, there is a limit at to how many we can actually put down. Therefore, participation is only possible by invitation from Ribe VikingeCenter.

We urge you to join us at another time or event during our season.

How do I apply?

• You must state which crafts you will be working with and presenting during your stay. Please note that we reserve the right to announce this on the day to be determined by agreement.

• Due to our planning, we would like to receive your application no later than 2 weeks before your arrival.
• Please note that until you have received a written confirmation from Ribe VikingeCenter, the arrangements are not yet valid.
