Crispy bread cubes

Did you know that wheat was a luxury in the Viking Age? It was difficult to grow wheat in Denmark, so wheat flour and wheat bread were reserved for special occasions. Crispy bread cubes

You can turn sad, stale bread into golden, crispy croutons. When you make them over the fire or grill, they even catch a hint of smoke and fire and become even more delicious to eat.

Procedure

Cut or tear the bread into rustic chunks and fry them in a pan with plenty of butter until golden and crisp. Sprinkle with salt.

You may also add a couple of crushed garlic cloves and some fresh thyme to the pan.

Ingredients

4 persons
  • 4 slices stale bread
  • Butter
  • Salt
  • Optional: thyme, garlic

Cook's notes

Never throw away dry bread. Day-old white bread can be transformed into these delicious bread bites, but it can also be used for dumplings and fried bread slices.
