Glass windows in Ansgar Church
In 2023, the National Museum of Denmark was able to document the use of glass windows during the Viking Age, when they were reserved for the elite and for religious purposes. Following this discovery, we at Ribe VikingeCenter decided to replace the temporary parchment coverings in Ansgar Kirke with stained glass mosaic windows.
The “Glass Windows in Ansgar Kirke” project was supported by Villum Fonden and Norlys Vækstpulje.
Ansgar Kirke was built at Ribe VikingeCenter in 2016–2017 and consecrated in May 2018. It is part of our presentation of Viking Age Ribe, where Bishop Ansgar was granted permission by the king to build a church in the mid 9th century. At Ribe Cathedral, which stands at the heart of the town of Ribe today, archaeologists have excavated Denmark’s earliest Christian graves. This supports the evidence that a Christian community existed in and around Ribe more than 100 years before Harald Bluetooth erected the Jelling Stone.About the series

The films were shot at Ribe VikingeCenter, where you can explore the buildings, the boats and the decorations, and meet Vikings at work with different crafts.
