Workshop: Fire, smoke and comfort food

Opens at 10:00 on Monday

Workshop on 15 October!
Step into the Viking kitchen, where food over the fire tastes of autumn. As darkness falls, we prepare warming dishes together, hear about the challenges of the dark season on a Viking farm, and enjoy our food at the communal table in the hall of the Longhouse.

Fire, smoke and comfort food

The dark season is drawing near, and we take inspiration from autumn’s richness and flavours as we prepare wonderful food over the fire, both filling and warming.

Together with the lady of the house we shall make barley with bacon and mushrooms, apple pork and soup with dumplings. All participants will work together on the different tasks, and as the expectant scent spreads, we can look forward to sharing a meal at the high table in the Longhouse, just as in the time of Harald Bluetooth, while darkness settles.

Look forward to a few truly cosy hours, where cooking and dining together tell the story of Viking food culture. We shall of course also hear about autumn on the Viking farm in 980 AD and the struggle to fill the larder, ensuring there was food enough for the Yule feast and the long winter ahead.

This workshop is a wonderful opportunity to try your hand at cooking over the fire and hopefully find inspiration to carry it on at home. It is a truly enjoyable activity for all ages.
