The journey of the church bell
The journey of the church bell
When Ribe VikingeCenter built the Ansgar Church, which was to have a church bell, it was only natural to look towards Hedeby (Haithabu) and the church bell that in 1978 was found in the water off the old Viking town of Hedeby in present-day Germany.
Out of sheer enthusiasm, volunteers at Ribe VikingeCenter and the Viking Museum Haithabu came up with the idea that a copy of the bell should be cast in Hedeby and then brought up to Ribe in a Viking ship. And the more they spoke about the idea, and the more people who heard of it, the clearer the vision and the plan became.
The story of the church bell’s journey is a moving tale of the volunteers’ dedication, friendship, and love of history, our shared cultural heritage.

The films were shot at Ribe VikingeCenter, where you can explore the buildings, the boats and the decorations, and meet Vikings at work with different crafts.
Ansgar Church
The reconstructed wooden church at Ribe VikingeCenter is a well-founded suggestion of how the first church in present-day Denmark may have looked. Read more here:
