Ripa Harbour

Episode -

Ripa Harbour

Ripa’s (Ribe’s) location by the North Sea was decisive for the town’s development. Goods were transported along the waterways, which created a strong and far-reaching network of trading towns, and towards 800 AD the sailing ship made its breakthrough in the North. One might say that the town was a bridge between worlds.

The harbour in Ripa most likely consisted of a number of landing stages, which over many years were expanded and joined together, making it possible for larger ships to dock directly at the marketplace.
