Boatbuilding
The boatbuilder
The boatbuilder has great experience and a fascinating understanding of both the material and the finished vessel. He even goes into the forest himself to select the oak trees to be used for building, and his apprentice follows the entire process closely, so the craft is handed down from generation to generation.
About the series
The documentary films on knowledge and craft have been created by Ribe VikingeCenter with support from the Nordea Foundation.
The films were shot at Ribe VikingeCenter, where you can explore the buildings, the boats and the decorations, and meet Vikings at work with different crafts.
The Viking boats in Ripa
At the harbour in Ripa at Ribe VikingeCenter lie three boats, all built at the Centre. These are boat types suited for sailing among the Wadden Sea islands, but also for seal hunting, fishing, and transporting cargo on the river. Read more about the boats here:
